I brought my car to a Ford dealership yesterday to have my washer bottle unblocked. There is 65k miles on the 2013 car. They called me to say that they had no record of having a 60k mile service done on the car which includes a transmission flush and coolant flush. I told them to go ahead and do it. I have now just pulled the manual for the car and it's not due either of those things.

FUEL INDUCTION SERV
COOLANT SYSTEM FLUSH
BG TRANS MERCON 5

Is what it's showing on the invoice. What would you guys do? Just pay it or question it?

At this point you agreed to have them do it so I think said and done.  Whether its in the manual or not is not going to matter much.  You got some unnecessary work done and they got paid is the bottom line so to speak.

Thanks Raja.  I was thinking the same thing myself.  At least it's done now.  I will know better the next time.

Any time I take the car in for service they want to change my oil. I always remind them of the actual recommendations in the manual. Even after 20k miles the oil is cleaner looking than the the oil after 5k miles in my Ranger.

Definitely a good idea to become familiar with the maintenance schedule so you don't end up with unneeded service in the future.

which includes a transmission flush and coolant flush.

That's technical speak that I will translate for you:  wallet flush.

Was it necessary?  Maybe not based on your owner's manual, but 5 years/60,000 miles is when I prefer to have such services done for peace of mind, so I feel a little $ is well worth it.  Doing so will only help and minimal servicing is only intended to get you past the warranty period anyways.

I spoke with the guy in the service department about the trsnsmisstra flush.  He told me that if the transmission was left until 150k they wouldn't do it as the transmission fluid is actually a detergrde and becomes acidic after time.  A later fluid change would take a substantial amount of lining from the clutch plates.  The invoice came to just shy of $700, although there's a few entries that I don't understand.  Maybe someone on here that is farmiliar with garage invoices might be able to decipher it for me?

I went to get a car serviced without checking the maintenance manual first. I got the “wallet flush” treatment too. Went home and checked the manual, and felt bad for my wallet, which was now hungry/empty.

My wife traded it in before 60k miles, so we didn’t experience this service visit...

Doesn't the CMax have an electronic e-CVT (like the Ford Escape Hybrid) which does not require a transmission flush?   The Escape Hybrid can have drain and refill of the the fluid (150,000 miles) but there is a very small amount in their.   I'm curious if the bill stated how much fluid was "used".

Yes, as per the owners manual (page 371): change @ 150,000 miles.

I suggest all owners download the PDF version as it makes searches super easy and quick.  I found this info in about :20 secs.  Info that can save you $$$ on needless servicing at the dealership.

On a side note:  This weekend I did a DIY transaxle flush on my daughters Suzuki with 125k miles.  Cost about $70 in fluids (5 gallons).  Also tried some SeaFoam transmission additive ($9) that transformed the shifting action of that old 4spd.

Not seeing any virus alerts and Google usually does a pretty good job of scanning stuff.

No redirection that I can see?

12 quarts of transmission fluid used. It looks like they flushed the whole system rather than drianing and refilling. Is there a dipstick or an easy access to check the condition of the fluid? I saw one post of Facebook of burnt transmission fluid after 60k miles.

The Prius transaxle fluid is supposed to be lifetime but the consensus from owners is to change it at regular intervals (60k) especially after 100k miles of use.  FWIW

I think I will DIY flush my Energi trans. at 50k miles.

I too brought in my 2013 for minor service a few weeks ago and was told my previous dealer had never done the full 60k service (just moved from Half Moon Bay to Ashland, Or). I too let them perform the service for peace of mind. My recollection is that one of the checklist items was flushing and changing the oil, but I did not remember the other details. For $500, the car seems much happier (that is the technical term) and the annoying hypersensitive parking sensor is now magically fixed. I drive about 75% electric, 25% hybrid. Thus, my thinking is the ICE engine benefits from such a service The reason I brought it in was it was running really rough and bucking one morning. It quickly resolved when I drove with gas for a few days - But just to be in the safe side... Given how little I have had to spend on this car, even compared to my previous 2004 2ndGen Prius, it seems ok to spend a lot on service periodically.
