2017 cmax energi.  When picking up my wife from the airport and hitting the unlock button, the trunk did not (or maybe simply does not) unlock.  At least not with the car in drive.  Is there an override button or trunk release button I'm not seeing?

Placing the transmission into PARK allows the trunk to unlock.  There is a trunk button on the key fob, but I figure there should be something on the dashboard I'm missing.  The manual was no help and I suspect it's a "safety" thing, but seems ridiculous that the passenger doors would unlock just fine, but not the trunk.

Thanks for any help!

That's true for my 2013 as well; the trunk doesn't open except in Park.

On my dashboard, the trunk open button is on the bottom right, next to the (even more hidden) gas lid button.

Safety feature I would guess. If you had the car in reverse and opened the hatch foot slips and ..........................

I could see me now:

Accidentally left in D, I remotely open the rear hatch, and someone is trying to put something heavy in.  I say, "let me help you with that", as I rush out to help, and the car starts creeping forward on it's own without a driver...

Placing the transmission into PARK allows the trunk to unlock.

Yup.  I've used this feature for years when dropping the kids off at school and they have extra stuff back there. The liftgate opening process takes way longer than putting the transmission selector in P so I really don't see what the issue is here as you aren't saving anytime by keeping it in D.   You can; however, drive off while the liftgate closes.  I only do this when it's empty of course.
