I finally found out what mileage the CMax gets on the highway at high speed with no pure EV miles involved.

Well, we might all have different definitions of ‘high speed,’ but mine, on the way back to PA from FL, is 75-80 mph. I usually keep ‘er under 65 to get the best mpg but hey we want to keep this to a one day affair. So 75-80 it is.

And the answer is: 35.5 mpg.

Meaning, I fueled up, reset the trip data and lit the afterburners all the way until I stopped for gas precisely 400 miles later. With just one rest stop in the middle. And the trip data showed 35.5 mpg.

This is a lot different than the 45-50 mpg+ I’m used to getting at lower highway speeds, mixed with pure EV at both ends of the trip, that is sure. And all explained by the fact that air resistance increases with the square of a vehicle’s speed.

Not surprised. Our 5k mi road trip this summer, all highway, mostly 70+mph the overall trip average read 37mpg. Still not terrible considering the alternative car we would have taken maxed out at 24mpg. My cousin also has a Subaru Crosstrek with the CVT and oddly enough the engine sounds very similar to the C-Max (I know it's not the same) and its EPA estimate is 35mpg highway.

My wife took over and ran at 70-75. When I came back on, I did the same.

The result? 45.5 mpg.

It’s all about air resistance.

Now go to 65mph speed limit in most areas and that number should rise even more though its not going to be as drastic.  Maybe 48mpg in the 2014 model?

At the end of the day speed kills MPG, so its all about what you're willing to accept for performance.  I've pretty much opted to go the speed limit as a good balance between getting there and keeping higher MPG numbers.  I make up for the slower speeds by making less stops.

One trip, I was in a hurry, 75mph speed limit and a 30+mph headwind, I got 27 mpg

Normal highway driving around here is 65-70 mph I average around 43 mpg

I did several day long 75-80mph highway stints on a multi-state trip this summer and also got about 35ish overall (low 33 in 106f temps, high of 36mpg in cooler temps).  Car is unstressed and comfortable too while gobbling up the miles.
