My audio system turned off on my Energi and I can't find a way to turn it back on. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Pull fuse 79. Wait a few and put it back in. Should then work.

The same thing happened to me on November 1, with my 2013 C-MAX Energi. After resetting the system, per Tech Support, with no change other than losing my destinations, I found this thread.

I figured that I had nothing to lose, so I tried pulling Fuse 79, cleaned the slightly patina-ed contacts, and reinserted.

Voila! Audio!

So Perry, just how did you figure this out????

That's kinda the general Sync reset idiocy of this car.  I've had to do it about a dozen times so far for GPS problems, BT issues, and last time I had a problem where the FM frequency wouldn't change on the screen and/or there was like a 10 second delay before it actually changed the station.

This car REALLY needs a reset button instead of having to dig under the dash every 6 months for something random.

Fuse pull worked for me. If it happens again I'll be real tempted to run a fuse to someplace more convenient.

I just had to do this for the second time, less than a week after the two-year anniversary of the car's purchase.  The audio died while I was in a grocery store for perhaps 10 minutes...

The contacts were *really* dirty, but it seemed to be just soot, since it wiped right off.

My 2017 did this over the weekend, I think it's crazy that we need to crawl under dash to remove a fuse.  I scheduled a service appointment and I'll have them check it out.  Mine was a used certified car with 4k on it when I bought it.  I thought I read somewhere that there was a software update that corrected this.  Love the car but seems a little basic to have a functional radio, I have a 14 Escape with the sync 3 in it and I've never had a problem, I probably just jinxed myself.

Ahh, sync 3, not the Microsoft rubbish we're stuck with.

Might also be a sign that your battery is going.  My radio did this a day or two before the battery died.

I had my 17 in the shop today to get the sound fixed, as soon as the dealer plugged in the diagnostic machine the radio started working.  The service manager called me and said good news and bad news, good news you have radio, bad news we didn't fix it nothing showing up in diagnostics.  At least I have radio now until it quits again.

I had this audio issue last week on my 2013 Energi. I've been checking the battery voltage regularly since I come out to find the car electrically dead once or twice a year. When I checked the 12V battery the morning after the audio issue started it was a volt down from where normally would be (down to 11.25V) after sitting 8 hours. I've seen this pattern before and found the car dead within a day or two. This time I pulled the fuse for Sync. It fixed both the audio problem and the battery drain. So... It might not be the battery.

I stopped using Windows 20 years ago and Microsoft is still finding ways to crash my stuff. Sigh...

Microsoft/Windows isn't the problem here. Any issues with 'Sync' proper are due to the company Ford partnered with to build the Sync UI on top of the Windows Automotive OS. Their implementation which is essentially a bloated Flash UI is the entirety of the known performance and reliability issues with Sync up to this point. Hell, Ford had to bring Microsoft devs in to fix those issues which is why we have 3.8/3.10 now which are pretty damn rock solid. The OS underneath is fine.

Now the no audio issue isn't even a Sync issue. The APIM still functions fine during this time. What happens is the ACM (which is basically just the AM/FM/Sirius/CD unit and takes the audio sources from Sync like USB, Bluetooth, voice alerts, nav and acts as an audio mixer and sends everything out to the speakers) is the part that is failing and will just go and freeze and not respond to any outside inputs and will also cause it to stay 'on' when the car is shut off. That is all in Ford's realm. In fact it seems some with Sync 3 still have this issue crop up from time to time as well. Not hard to believe. Same ACM just the APIM has changed.

Interesting. It sounded from automotive press pieces in early 2014 like Ford was switching from Windows Embedded Automotive to QNX specifically to address customer complaints about the stability and functionality of their entertainment/communications system. That's cited in histories of Sync too. This seems like an injustice given what you describe. But, hey, I worked on enough high visibility development projects to have seen executive finger pointing in action and Ford had a lot of blame to deflect.

Thanks for the details. Sync in my 2013 Energi is still painful to use but perhaps it will help me point my own fingers more accurately in the future. Not that it will help any of it get fixed.

I imagine, and this is just a guess, that the move to QNX was a combination of wanting to start fresh and also 'following the leader' as most infotainment systems on the market have moved that direction. And given the utter hammering they received from the likes of JD Power and Consumer Reports in the early days of MFT/Sync 2, it isn't hard to see the desire to completely sweep it under the rug and start at square one again. Though according to at least one post floating around from a Ford employee, they had originally planned to allow migrating existing Sync 2 systems to the new Sync 3 software but that sadly never came. Would have been nice to see.

As a side note, this link is a very interesting read. As someone points out there if you are familiar with the Coca-Cola Freestyle machines and the utter joke of a sluggish UI they have, say hello to the same developer who built the MyFord Touch/Sync 2 UI.

FWIW though with all that said once Sync 2 got updated to 3.10 it has become really solid. It is no speed demon for sure but it is far from unusable IMHO. If yours hasn't been updated to this version I'd highly recommend it and for good measure do a master reset after the fact. I've taken my C-Max on a cross country road trip twice, often going near non-stop for ~2500 miles while using the entirety of the Sync system from the built in nav, Bluetooth Audio, music playback from USB, etc. and have had zero issues.

On top of that apparently there is some recent reverse engineering work over on XDA regarding getting additional apps installed on MFT including Mirrorlink which is essentially a poor mans version of Android Auto/Carplay. Hopefully if it gets solid traction we may finally start seeing an analog to the Applink platform which was sold to us and quickly yanked away early on.

I remember what I thought was a promise in 2014 from Ford to make Sync 3 available to Sync 2 users followed later by a statement that hardware incompatibilities made it impossible. That was a major letdown.

The Ford Owner site claims that SYNC2-V3.8 (which I have installed) is the last version of Sync available for my 2013 Energi. I just took one of those 2500 mile trips that you mentioned (first one in this car) and my experience was... nothing like yours. Where did you find 3.10? I found a listing (via xda-developers) for something that claims to be 3.10 on a third party download service, but it seems odd that it isn't on Ford's site.

That Hacker News link gave me development project from hell flashbacks. It would be a good thing to keep around to reread when I have doubts about having retired.

Yeah, sadly since Ford has all but dropped any possibility of future updates for Sync 2 the self update option and their site hasn't been as useful as it once was. The safest option for 3.10 is to take it to the dealer and have them do it. My update was part of an entire APIM replacement as my original APIM had the bootloop/'black screen of death' issue. Been going on about a year and a half with the new one which was loaded with 3.10 out of the gate. Thankfully had it covered with the 12M02 warranty.

... The safest option for 3.10 is to take it to the dealer and have them do it. ...

I asked specifically for this when I had my car in today. My dealer said that, according to Ford's diagnostic/update software, it wasn't available for my car. That corresponds with what the Sync-related part of the Ford owner site claims when it's working (which isn't often these days). Weird. Disappointing.
