Here are some things I have learned that may be useful to others:

1.  The Energi uses what is called the Euro key fob.  It looks identical to fobs used on other Ford products but is electrically different than the Edge, F150, etc.  It even has the same FCC ID as those other fobs which leads to a lot of confusion on eBay.  I think only the Escape and Focus EV use the same fob as the Energi.  If you are buying a used fob, be sure it has 7812A-xxxx on the right side under the mechanical key head.

2.  The Energi fob has two electronic key plus the mechanical key.  If you look on the right side of the steering column, you will see a notch with a radiation symbol under it.  When the proximity key isn't working (maybe has a dead battery), you can hold the fob in the slot and the car will sense the transponder key in the fob.  You can still drive the car with a dead battery in the fob.

3.  You can make a more traditional door key from one of the Focus ignition keys available on eBay.  You have to cut 7mm off of the ignition key to make it the correct length for a door key.  It is difficult to find someone to cut an eBay sidewinder key.  The cutters are expensive and they want to sell you the key blank to help pay off their investment.  I have been able to cut my own keys but you have to have a lathe.  Here is a link to how I cut sidewinder keys:

Thanks, good info in case anyone needs to replace a fob. Maybe you can help me with a question about the fob. I have a '14 Energi SEL and I think I read in the manual that the symbol at the end of the fob, the one with the 2X and arrow circling the 2X, is supposed to roll down all the windows.  I have tried to use it and it does nothing that I can see, is this a feature that has been turned off and if so how do I turn it on?

That button you are indicating is the remote start. Click the lock button once, then that button twice and it'll start. Rolling down windows you need to click the unlock button once, wait about a second, then press and hold the unlock button.

Thanks, that'll come in handy, especially this winter, just leave the seat heater on when I get out then it'll be toasty warm when I hit the remote start.

Make sure to check the menus on the left cluster screen. There are settings in there for the remote start including duration and climate control settings. The manual will cover some details as well. I have mine on the 'auto' setting for everything where it will always aim for 72 degrees and run defrost if necessary regardless of what you had set when you exited the car previously.

You can do remote start much easier from the phone or desktop  app.  No worries about where you are, comes in really handy at the airport when you park your car in a huge lot.

My remote start worked from the top of the St. Louis arch all the way down to my car parked on a city street below. I could see the lights flash as I hit "lock" repeatedly.

Yep. Set up MyFordMobile and have fun. I have an Android Wear device (original Moto 360) and MFM has an app for it. Nice to just pull it up on my watch and tap the remote start option and go. :)

Anyone else have this problem with their keyfob?

I started experiencing random opening of the rear hatch. Not too big of deal exept when it happened in the garage with the garage door open, then the hatch opens up and hits the door. I have quite a few scratches in the paint now.

Anyway, I was trying to figure out how the rear hatch opens by itself. After all, it takes a double button press to open it and that's hard to do accidently.

I took the fob apart and a tiny metal disc fell out.  Turns out that there is a metal disc glued to the bottom of each silicone key pad that makes contact with the circuit board when pressed. The glue failed and the disc was randomly making contact with the circuit board.  So now I have a non-working rear hatch button.

So if anyone's car suddenly seems to develop a mind of its own and starts doing strange things, check the keyfob first.  It could also explain why you cant roll down the windows.

Not sure about the fob, but have a trick for you with the garage door: Open the hatch and manually move it to where you need where it is open but does not hit the garage door. Then hold and press the close button on the hatch until it beeps. It will set that position as the 'full open' from now on.
