I read about this problem before buying the car and I wouldn't have if it hadn't still been under warranty. Awhile back (I've only had it 6 months) I noticed a strange sound. It got more noticable. I was pretty sure it was the transmission. Dropped it off at the local dealer this morning. People rag on dealer service but I have to say, my local dealer has been really good so far.

The service writer just called and confirmed what I thought. He explained the entire procedure. About what has to be removed and inspected and how they have to send pics to Ford and repair from there. He explained he would likely have it a week or more (which I expected) and Ford would provide me a loaner car. (which I will take them up on).

I'll continue with follow up here.

Bummer...hopefully they fully cover it.  I still have about a years worth of mileage on my warranty...then I need to figure out next steps.  Probably trade in on a used one with low miles.

Yeah. The hybrid component warranty, which covers the eCVT, is minimum 8 yrs/100k miles (or 10yr/150k miles in CARB states) so barring your mileage the time restriction puts 2013's out to 2021 at bare minimum for coverage.

Just got a call from the Ford garage. Ford is putting an entirely new transmission in it. Won't be here until Friday at the earliest. They gave me a 2016 Ford Focus to drive and while it's a competent car, I am anxious to get mine back.

Sounds like things are going smoothly and you will have a new trans too. :smile2:

Perry.  Thank sweet Jesus for the hybrid/tranny warranty.   Keep us posted on the results and performance of the new sealed unit - smooth and efficient if it is done right.

Also it is good to know that the dealer in WV plays nice with the warranty repair.   Hope that you avoid all non-warranty electrical issues.

What does a failing transmission sound like? Mine is an early 2014 and has the same issues with the tranny but it only has 17K miles on it.

I've experienced some of the electrical gremlins. I read about the transmission issues before buying the car and I wouldn't have bought it if it didn't have warranty left on it. I'll offer a full report as soon as I get it back.

I've read there are varying reports on what it sounds like but on mine the best I can describe it is to imagine how your disc brakes sound after sitting for a long time and has had some rust build up on them. The sound they make as you apply the brakes and wear the rust off.

It seemed to work fine but the noise bugged me. It wasn't annoying loud, just knowing it was there especially in electric mode where the car should be very quiet.

My first trans lasted 98K mi. and was making a lot of grinding, gear teeth clattering sounds. I have not heard of a trans failing and I was still getting great mileage when I got mine replaced.  :smile2:  So then you can replace the trans when it's convenient for you. The only important thing is to make sure it's under warranty. I have 56k mi. on my new one. :smile2:

I thought that it was very amusing that I got several text messages telling me that my car's alarm was going off while it was last in the shop.

Just picked the car up. Much quieter. I'll give a final report after putting a few miles on it. I popped the hood and looked when I got home. Brand new.

I went ahead and had them do an oil change while they had it. I figure synthetic is good for 10,000, I had put 7500 on since I bought it but since I wasn't 100% sure when it was last changed I had them do it. $31.50 I couldn't even buy the oil for that much. (not that the car will even have 10,000 on it in that many miles)

I've been very pleased with the service of my local dealer.
