I called Ford customer service main number and they determined that the modem part is indeed available for failed units at this time and for all units at a later date. I told them that the service no longer works when my car is parked at home in the garage but does function in some other locations. When I told them that I frequently access the system online when the car is parked at home in the garage, they said to let the dealer know this and they would order the part. BTW, they have to use a different form to order as an emergency replacement.
Well, that sounded good until I called the dealer and they said I would have to take the car to them for a day to let their service department check it out to determine if the modem was functional or not before they could order it "according to protocol". I told them that would not be a valid confirmation of my problem unless they came to my house to do the testing in my garage. Of course they said that was not according to "protocol".
Since I'm in the middle of an ongoing fight with AT&T on a completely unrelated issue to get them to come finishing burying a cable from the street to my house which they installed over a year ago, it was concluded that since my patience meter is already below zero, getting into a fight right now with my dealer could perhaps land me in jail. So................guess it will be prudent to just wait until the parts are readily available, which hopefully will be before the 2g service is totally discontinued.
Unfortunately my previous Service Advisor has left the dealership, however GOOD FOR HIM because he's probably better off!
