When I go to open my 2013's hatchback to access the cargo area, if I simply press the button over the license plate and pull up, I hear a "click" inside the car but I can't open it. Instead, I have to push in while depressing the button to get it to open. This is definitely not the intended functionality and it baffles anybody who tries to use my car. Has anybody else encountered this, and does anybody have any guesses on what is going wrong?

What a coincidence, I just encountered that for the first time a couple of days ago while on vacation. Everything looks normal.

Maybe you just have to oil the latch?

Why are you pulling up? I just push the button ang get out of the way.

If the car is not unlocked I may have to press it twice, but there is a fix for that.

Mine doesn't have a power liftgate.

Same here just like Bob, I didn't think it was a manual gate.

Indeed, it just needed lubrication on the hatch. I brought it in to the a Ford dealer (Haldeman, in Allentown) for a 30,000 mile service figuring that I should get it checked over while it's still under the factory warranty and before our road trip to Boston this August. They couldn't replicate it when I wasn't there but when they brought the car around I showed them and the guy at the desk picked up a can of spray silicone and got it working. That was after I paid, too, which was a nice touch. (Victor was the guy who helped me out, if Ford collects positive reviews here.) My wife picked up some baby stuff from a friend today and confirmed it opened without giving her any trouble.

Cool, glad you got it sorted, and have a safe trip to Boston!
